Sheep Creek Loop Backway

Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you wind through Sheep Creek’s awe-inspiring rock spires. Keep a look out for bighorn sheep, deer, elk, birds, and many more creatures. This route was designated a State of Utah Scenic Backway in December of 1990. The Backway is a 10-mile-long loop and is mostly paved. Short sections in the canyon have been graveled due to road deterioration.
The Backway travels through a spectacular canyon designated as a geological area by the U.S. Forest Service on May 13, 1962. The canyon is one of the few places in the world where tourists can cover millions of years in only 20 minutes of driving.
An immense earth structure, the Uinta Crest fault, extends in a generally east-west direction through the center of this area. On the south side of the fault the earth’s crust has been raised upward over 15,000 feet. Subsequent erosion has greatly reduced the upturned sedimentary strata north of the fault. Several of these formations are now clearly exposed within the geological area. Younger formations are progressively exposed as one travels from south to north through the canyon.
Tour Map
Browns Park Scenic Backway

Departing from Diamond Mountain Plateau on the Jones Hole Scenic Backway, this backway travels north across Diamond Mountain, down Crouse Canyon, and into Browns Park. It continues into Colorado, crossing the Green River via a one-vehicle-at-a-time suspension bridge. A short side trip takes you to the John Jarvie Historical Site, a preserved remnant of the frontier west. Before ending at US 191 five miles north of Dutch John, the backway passes through the narrow, winding and steep Jessie Ewing Canyon. Approximately 50 miles, the backway requires two hour travel time. This route is closed in winter months and should not be traveled during heavy rain.

Other structures built on the ranch in the 1880s include the stable and corral structure, the stone house, and the blacksmith shop.

Snowmobiling Information
Green River Fishing
The fish continue to feed during the wintertime, while the number of fisherman decrease.
Green River Fishing on warm, sunny days in January, February, and March can lead to hatches and excellent fishing. Gently falling snow can also bring fish to the surface. Wintertime is an excellent time to take advantage of our expert guide services while booking our Best of Day –Winter Special.
Ice Fishing
Ice fishing is a popular pastime in the winter. Take advantage of ice fishing on the wonderful surrounding lakes and streams. The ice fishing season usually starts to wind down in late February and early March, as ice conditions begin to deteriorate on low elevation waters. High elevation waters usually have safe ice into April.
Ice fishing on the Flaming Gorge for big lake trout can be a great sport. The best fishing is usually in areas which have recently frozen. In general, smaller fish are caught on the north end of the reservoir and the fish become larger as the ice progresses southward.
Warm weather and fluctuating water levels may cause hazardous ice so always be cautious when ice fishing.
Sledding & Playing
There is always enough time in the winter for some fun! Enjoy the surrounding areas just playing in the snow or sledding down hills. It’s fun for the whole family!
Rafting & Boat Rentals
Perhaps the most enjoyable way to experience the impressive Green River is on one of our rafts. You can do some Utah whitewater rafting or just relax and enjoy the Green River fishing. Our Green River float trips originate below Flaming Gorge Dam. The Utah whitewater rapids span out over seven miles down the Green River. Several small rapids between the dam and Little Hole make this seven-mile float fun, yet safe for the entire family.
All rentals come with basic instructions, a river map, life jackets, oars, and bailing device. You will need to make any additional adjustments for camping and fishing equipment. Transportation options are available and arrangements can be made at the time you pick up your equipment.
